Appearance of galvanised products.
Our supplier has removed chromium-based products from the galvanising process as part of an industry-wide move toward more environmentally sustainable practices.
Whilst this will have no impact on the quality and durability of our galvanised products, you may notice a different appearance.
What’s changing?
Legislation in both the UK and Europe has mandated the removal of chromium-based products in galvanising processes due to its environmental impact and carcinogenic risk in some forms.
What this means for you
These changes mean the colour of the finish may differ slightly from what you’ve previously been used to. It may go duller quicker, and in wet or damp conditions, you may see a white, powdery substance appear.
Why does this happen?
When the galvanised steel is hot dipped, it creates a transparent, micro-thin layer of metal oxide that acts as a temporary shield. This passivation layer lasts for a few weeks until it’s consumed, allowing the zinc to naturally form its intended protective patina. Without chromium, the passivation process is accelerated.
What effect does it have?
Although you may notice some small changes in the appearance of our galvanised products, it’s important to reassure you that nothing has changed in terms of quality, durability, or corrosion protection.
These differences are simply visual and are a natural result of a more environmentally responsible process.
